Runner Notes

There is a small water spring on the route around mile three of the last climb to the fire tower. The trail consists of smooth singletrack and some areas of technical rocks on the climbs.

Description

The Little Snowball Mountain Trail is a 7 mile out-and-back, with nearly 2,500 feet of elevation gain, that starts at small parking area on the road to Craggy Gardens Picnic Area.

The run begins on a small section of the Mountains to Sea Trail then goes to the trailhead. From the trailhead, prepare for a steady climb, with switchbacks, to Snowball Mountain. From Snowball Mountain, the trail heads downhill to a nice view from Hawkbill Rock. The next 2.5 miles consists of a steady downhill and then a climb to the top of Little Snowball Mountain and a short stretch to the fire tower viewpoint.

Flora & Fauna

Wildflowers and rododendron flourish during the spring and summer months. In addition to wildflowers, there are many different varieties of mushrooms found along the trail. Bear, deer, and turkey can be seen in this area. Copperhead and rattlesnakes are common in this area.
