Overview

As you're driving to the area, keep a sharp eye out. The trailhead is right on the road, making it easy to miss.

The trail itself is well-marked throughout. The first half of the trail is gradual, and leads through the open woods. The second half of the trail is very, very steep, but worth it for the view at the top.

The reward is an amazing view of South Holston Lake. Another trail continues along the ridge at the top, which runners can follow for several minutes if they'd like to reach a creek crossing. Though nothing special on its own, this is good for dogs who need some water on the trail.

Need to Know

There is a creek/bog area at about 1.5 miles into the trail.

Description

The trailhead is located off of Flatwoods Road where there is a brown post with a blue circle and #49 at the edge of the road indicating the trailhead. The first half of the run features a gradual incline through the open woods, and the second half of the trail is very, very steep and strenuous.

The trail is marked with blue blazes all the way to the top. When the trail reaches the Holston Mountain Ridge, there will be a clearing with Flint Rock overlooking South Holston Lake with a 180° view. This trail passes the Flatwoods Horse Trail and also connects to the Holston Mountain Trail at the top, making it easy to continue your journey.

History & Background

This trail is located in Cherokee National Forest in the Watauga Ranger District.
