Description
Beginning at the Scenic Drive, the trail climbs steep switchbacks to a river-sculpted terrace below the Wingate Cliff. After a short ascent, the path enters the canyon and drops quickly to the sandy floor. Side canyons and abundant vegetation add to the beauty of the red rock walls. As Cohab Canyon widens, the route traverses slickrock down to a junction with the trail that leads to the viewpoints high above on the north and south sides. These spur trails are well worth your time; views over the Fruita Historic District are especially gorgeous in the fall. Most people turn around after spending time at the overlooks by backtracking and descending the trail back down to their car.
If you decide to continue hiking on top of the mesa, a junction with the
Frying Pan Trail follows, which allows you to connect to the
Cassidy Arch spur trail. Otherwise, the path stays high above the deepening canyon and eventually descends to Highway 24, just east of the
Hickman Bridge trailhead. You would need a shuttle vehicle parked here to get you back to the trailhead.
