Description
Wander down the Pioneer Trail for a special look into this area's rich, pastoral history.
Starting at the Pioneer Trail Parking Area, head north along flat terrain, veering left (north) at the junction with the
Hamilton Ridge Trail. Once on the Pioneer Trail, continue along on unbroken terrain, passing a historic farmstead and its crumbling stone walls and hayfields. This is a particularly special opportunity to observe the active reclamation of farm fields by the forests from which they were originally cleared.
Progress along the trail, keeping your eyes peeled for small pocket clearings affording viewers stunning views of the Delaware below. A collapsing lime kiln can be seen in the vicinity.
Eventually, the trail will begin to climb the ridgeline rather strenuously until its junction with the
Hamilton Ridge Trail. At this point, visitors can either return the way they came or head southwest along the
Hamilton Ridge Trail to the Pioneer Trail Parking Area.
Flora & Fauna
Eastern hardwood forests commandeer this area. Keep your eyes peeled for chestnut, white oak, and northern red oak along the trail. Mountain laurel has also been seen in this area from time to time.
