A moderate forest road that transitions to singletrack.

Description

Newton Road begins from Skyline Blvd just NW of Germantown Road. The trail begins as a forest road for fire access, so it is wide and smooth. The descent is also fairly moderate for the first mile. Along the gentle section you'll pass an intersection with Firelane 10 and a spur trail, both of which lead to the Wildwood Trail. Not much further along, you'll come to another spur which also leads to Wildwood. After about a mile and only 200 feet of descending, you'll cross the Wildwood Trail itself. This intersection is very well marked—there is even a trail map with a "you are here" dot making it extra clear where you are.

After crossing the Wildwood Trail, the trail will begin to descend much more steeply for another 0.75 miles. This section follows a ridge before turning to descend to a creek. At the creek crossing the forest road part of the trail ends, from thereafter the trail becomes singletrack. The singletrack section can be slightly overgrown with raspberries and other plants. The trail follows the creek for about a quarter of a mile before closing with NW St Helens Road (30) and joining the BPA Road Trail.

This trail is best used for making various loops with the Wildwood Trail and especially the BPA Road Trail. If doing the latter, I'd recommend going down the BPA Road and ascending Newton Road as BPA offers lovely views to the northeast of the three main Cascade volcanoes (the direction of the descent) while Newton has more shade and better trail grip for climbing.
