San Pedro Rock features spectacular formation of sedimentary turbidite layers of rock that have been compressed and pushed almost vertically by plate tectonics. The layers of lighter siltstone stick out like dragon spines from the darker layers of gravel. The north side was sheared off by movements of the Pilarcitos fault which enters the ocean here.
The island has the most beautiful coastal cave and has tide pools as full of sea life as anywhere I've seen on the California Coast. It is often visited by sea lions. Many species of birds nest high on the rocks or use the island as a hunting perch. It has spectacular views of the Pedro Point Headlands and back across the bay to Pacifica, Daly City, and on to the Marin Headlands.
Long Walk: The island can only be visited during very low tides via a 40 to 60 minute run from the Pedro Point/Linda Mar Beach area of Pacifica. The run borders on private land, so you must stay below the high tide line.
