Description

Located at the southern tip of Capital Reef National Park is a geologic wonder not to be missed! The Halls Creek Narrows are a remote, 3.8-mile stretch of canyon, deeply carved into the white Navajo sandstone. RunnerS will be able to explore the perennial stream that has carved this stunning landscape over the course of time. The cool water of the stream and shade from the overhanging canyon walls create an oasis in the middle of the surrounding desert.

The entrance to the Narrows is marked by a large grove of cottonwood trees. Here, Halls Creek leaves it's previous course flowing along the wide canyon separating the Waterpocket Fold and Halls Mesa, and cuts into the sandstone walls of the canyon. This stark change is impressive. For the next 3.8 miles, the creek winds through a deep and narrow canyon. This section requires some walking in water. The depth of the water can vary greatly from year to year and from season to season. Be aware that flash floods periodically wash out the sediment, leaving pools that may require deep wading or short swims.

Be aware that route conditions in the Narrows change frequently due to weather, flash floods, rockfall, and other hazards. Check with the visitor center for weather and conditions updated prior to planning your run to the Narrows.

Overnight Trip: It is recommended to access the Halls Creek Narrows as part of a multi-day outing - see Halls Creek and Narrows Route (Grand Gulch) for more details. It is a fairly strenuous run to get to the entrance to the Narrows which are 3.8-miles long themselves. An overnight excursion will ensure plenty of time to explore this gem without tired legs!
