Description

The 4,232-foot Bearwallow Mountain is the highest peak in the Bearwallow Highlands range in Henderson County and the tallest summit of the Hickory Nut Gorge. It straddles the Eastern Continental Divide, which separates the Atlantic watershed from the Gulf of Mexico watershed. From this vantage point, you can see nearly 360 degrees, thanks to the grassy open meadow. These views include some of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains.

Be sure to look for:

Panoramic views in almost every direction
View of Mt. Mitchell, the highest point in the eastern U.S., to the north
Amazing sunsets
Starry night skies
Grassy ridgetop meadow
Historic fire tower
Grazing cows (this protected land is a working farm)

Short Run: A short 1 mile trail will lead users from the parking area to the view point.

Some Mud - Fun hike but crowded. Makes the rock scramble to the top a bit more difficult since that part also has wet rocks and some mud
