Need to Know
A national park pass is required for parking in Banff national park. Vehicles not displaying a park pass can be ticketed.
Runner Notes
Excellent trail running terrain. Make noise as bears frequent the area.
Description
From the Redearth Creek parking area, runners (and cyclists) transit the highway fence through either a large vehicle gate or a smaller pedestrian gate. Be sure to latch the gate behind you to keep animals off the freeway corridor.
Following a wide, very well maintained trail through forest, is easy as the grade is gentle for at least the first 7 km to Lost Horse Creek camping. After Lost Horse, the trail steepens slightly but is still wide, easy to follow, and easy.
At the Redearth/Pharoah junction, go right where the trail turns to singletrack and becomes steeper as it gains elevation. You'll probably see day hikers out from Shadow Lake lodge as you approach Shadow Lake and the Shadow Lake campground, just west of the lake.
Flora & Fauna
Many grouse sun themselves on the trail in fall. Deer frequent the area as do bears.
