Need to Know

This trail starts immediately out front of the Smith River National Recreation Area's visitor center, and there is lots of parking right on Highway 199.

Also note that the trailhead is not marked on the other side where it meets French Road.

Description

This entire trail is switchbacks, straight up, and straight down. Most of the path is well groomed and soft, although there are a few rocky spots. There are only a couple spots where you pass a creek and might get wet, even in the spring.

The trail is listed in the Smith River National Recreation Area as being 2.8 miles each direction, and there are two trees marked with a 1 and 2 respectively indicating the mile markers.

If you're looking for a fun jaunt up the French Hill with occasional views of the Smith Valley and Gasquet, then this is it.
