Overview

This run is mostly on good forest roads and on normal mountain trails. The path along the ridge could be slippery in wet conditions. The run down from Muchetta to Jenisberg is steep and slippery. Bring walking poles. This is also the only section of the trail where the path is sometimes unclear.

Description

The start of the run is at the Monstein train station which lies on the valley floor, but the actual village is a 45 min uphill run along a forest road. A public bus can connect the two points. At the train station and at the beginning of the village, public parking available. Monstein is a typical Walser village with wooden houses and two churches. Several fountains provide drinking water for the run.

The trail to Büelenhorn follows first a good alp road, and then, from Mäschenboden, a rocky mountain path. The trail is easy to follow as there are red/white markers that guide the way. After 11 km from the station, and 1460 m gain in altitude, one arrives at the Büelenhorn. The view from there is great, especially towards Mittelbünden.

Follow a grassy ridge, called Stulsergrat, which is mostly downhill, but with some short uphill sections to arrive at Muchetta, another amazing view point. From there, it’s downhill to Jenisberg. That is definitely the most challenging part of the run as it is very steep and it’s easy to slip on the wet grass. Don’t attempt it without walking poles!

From Jenisberg to Monstein-Station, the trail is on a mostly easy and good path that is shared with mountain bikers. There is relatively long but not steep upward section before it goes definitely downhill to the station and the end of the route.

Alternatively, to shorten the run, one could run down a forest road to Wiesen-Station and take the train back to Monstein or other places. Another alternative is to run to Monstein and visit the brewery or having a drink or both.
