Many people attempt to go uphill along the paved trail, but an EBMUD permit is required beyond the gate.

Description

This trail starts at the end of Elderberry Trail junction. You'll be head west towards the Rocky Ridge Peak and running along the ridgeline while enjoying bay views on your left, and canyon views and Mt. Diablo on your right. At 1.1 miles where you'll see a EBMUD gate on the left, make a right turn, heading down a bit, continue until you reach the paved trail. From here, you have an option to run down the paved trail to head back to the staging area. This portion of the trail is only about 0.5 miles but is very steep.
