Runner Notes

This short out-and-back trail wouldn't make much of a run on its own, but if you are staying in town, you could easily add it on to a longer outing.

Description

This half-mile trail is a short and easy outing. The trail leads through a section of dense podocarp forest before a small climb through some historic gold mining remnants. Keep an eye open for old mining equipment just before crossing a wooden bridge over a small creek.

The trail then heads toward the wide Waiho River basin, where views of the valley open up briefly through the dense forest. In the 1950's, visitors used to be able to see the terminal end of the glacier at this point in the valley. It is both impressive and sad to see how much the glacier has receded, leaving a wide valley and the gray stone basin of the Waiho River behind.

Flora & Fauna
