Runner Notes

Insect repellent is needed in the summer, spring and fall. If there's sun out, there are gators here. If it's summer and there isn't sun, there are still gators here. There are also some popular fishing holes in this area, so beware the stray cast.

Description

This trail starts at a small parking area on the side of Hwy 170. From the trailhead, the path follows a vegetated path to the river, where it turns onto a grass, dirt and gravel access road that winds with the river to a small intake dam. At the dam, the trail turns right and follows the diversion canal along a mostly gravel road before turning onto the Tupelo Trail at an old access bridge where the canal turns.

The trail flows along with the Tupelo Trail for a short distance before turning down another lane that leads back to the original path a short distance west of the parking area. The ground is mostly level throughout the trail, with occasional wash outs that fill during heavy rains. High grass in areas during the late summer can be a hassle, as well as a haven for ticks, but otherwise the route is easy and fast.

Flora & Fauna

Alligators, coyotes, snakes, waterfowl and wading birds dominate the large animal niches. Wild pigs and birds of prey are also prevalent.
