If you plan to run, be prepared for a leg burner. After a deceptively flat start, this trail continues up, up, up!

Starting from the Rooster Comb Trailhead, follow the trail over a boardwalk through marshy ground to reach a junction with a loop trail around a small pond (the local elementary school kids built it long ago, so don't strain yourself too hard looking for beavers.) The trail will continue around the pond to the west, and will quickly depart into the beautiful deciduous forests typical of the region.

After a flat start, don't be surprised when the trail begins to steepen. Roostercomb Peak is but a small barrier for many runners seeking access to higher peaks. The trail will zigzag upwards and move over a combination of loamy soil and rocks. Watch your step, especially in the fall when leaves make the trail slick.

After passing a few signed junctions, you'll reach a junction with the Flume Brook Trail and the Hedgehog Trail near 1.9 miles in. Head right on the Roostercomb Trail to continue to the summit, but otherwise, you can continue on the Hedgehog Trail to experience more of the High Peaks' famous Great Range. While the beaver pond that you pass on the right is scenic, you're more likely to see various bird species on this trail.
