Runner Notes

This is a good way to avoid running on the slippery steep snow on the northern parts of the Skyline Trail.

Description

The Upper Skyline Trail is a useful alternative if the normal Skyline route is too steep or snowy for safe travel. Using the Upper Skyline Trail adds about 250 feet of ascent and descent but avoids a long snowfield crossing. From the junction with the Skyline Trail, head north and uphill over a rocky patch of ground. Clamber over steep terrain which eventually levels out upon turning west and crossing a few small snowy patches. Reach another rocky crest near where the Pebble Creek Spur provides access to the Pebble Creek Trail. Pass these by and continue south and downhill towards Panorama Point and the terminus of the Upper Skyline Trail where it rejoins Skyline.

Take some time to soak in the superb views from Panorama Point. These huge vistas encompass Paradise Valley, the jagged Tatoosh Range, Mount Adams, Mount Saint Helens and even Oregon's Mt. Hood.
