The views of Salkantay Mountain fade as we descend on the other side of the pass, but there is still a lot to see if you look up and around.

If you look closely, you'll see a pair of critters which are chinchillas (or close relatives of chinchillas). We saw these here, and also at Machu Picchu itself.

Homesteading, Andes style. Our understanding is that locals can develop a section of land and if they live on it for a period of time each year, they can get the rights to the land. In this picture, this development appears to be a horse corral.

No cars out here - things move via pack animal while on the Salkantay Trail. Here, it's propane. The horses are not roped together, so give them lots of room.
