Beware the cacti!
Description
This is an alternative to Big Dominguez or you can use this as a way to make a loop down after going up Big Dominguez. You start off at Steamboat Mesa - there's a cow pond at road end and a "spring" (Steamboat Spring) just about 200 yard off the trail from the gate to the trail. This will most likely be the last water until you reach the Little Dominguez Creek about 9 miles down.
From the gate across the mesa, the trail is fairly clear (does become faint at times) all the way to the start of the wash down the Middle Canyon. This is where you have to pay close attention to your downloaded track to make it to the northwest headwall of the Middle Canyon. From there down, and all the way back to Bridgeport the trail is very obvious. Along the top of the mesa, pay close attention to foot placement as there are a ton of "grabber" cacti that like to bite.
Once out of the middle canyon to the Little Dominguez Creek, the path follows the creek all the way to the Big Dominguez trail. About 1 mile from that trail junction is an old historic Rambo cabin and farm site. The property was established in 1911 and Billyie Rambo was born there and lived there until he sold it to the BLM in 1988. You can get a great glimpse into frontier life at this spot.
