The trailhead for this trail is a short distance off paved highway FM 170 East. This Texas state park charges a $5/day entrance fee (available online). You'll need to display a fee receipt when you park.

Need to Know

There are no amenities or potable water at the trailhead. There is no shade along this trail. Bring sun protection and plenty of water if you hike it during the hotter months. Do not attempt to cross the river into Mexico.

Description

Hoodoos are stone columns. A typical hoodoo exhibits a prominent capstone of hardened material with a column of softer, more erodible material such as mudstone or tuff. The irregularly-shaped column is formed from millions of years of erosion by rain and wind.

Going in a clockwise direction, the trail descends from the parking lot and then makes an easy climb to an overlook. From here you can look north and south along the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) River. The trail then drops down to the river and goes northwest along its bank. On the other side of the river is Mexico. Access to the river is limited by thick vegetation. Continuing on, the trail leaves the river and circles northeast past three prominent hoodoos and then up to rejoin the trail coming down from the parking lot.
