Need to Know
You'll likely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the TH. Officially, there does not seem to be a true TH and parking at the gate to the fens is not recommended. 0.2 miles prior to the gate, there is a parking area that can accommodate 3 to 4 vehicles. This area is just past a creek crossing on the right and it is the beginning of the designated route on this map. If you do have a 4x4, the old Geneva Township mining ghost town is farther up the road. The Forest Service has clearly designated camping areas and parking areas along the entire Geneva Creek Road and parking elsewhere is not recommended and especially do not block the gate to the fens.
To get there, head west on Geneva Creek road (County Rd 1038) on the south side of Guenella pass. There are winter seasonal road closures.
Description
This is a specially designated area within the US Forest Service set up to protect these rare Iron Fens. The run is a jeep road, but it is closed to traffic. The Forest Service has recently installed footbridges at the water crossing, about a third of the way in, but they are somewhat poorly marked. There are very good views at times, especially when crossing the avalanche zone. Otherwise, that trail is straightforward, except when you come to a fork in the road about two-thirds of the way up; stay to the right to see the main iron fens. Tread carefully around the Iron Fens so as to prevent damage to the area.
