Description

Pinguisibi (formerly Sand River) is the Ojibwe name for "river of fine white sand". This river is an ancient travel route used by the Ojibwe as they hunted, fished and trapped northwards into the interior. There are three major waterfalls (or cascades) along the trail between the trailhead on Highway 17 and Portage 28 on the Sand River Canoe Route. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow as it goes inland along the north side of the river. The long cascade of the first waterfall is a very short distance from the trailhead, with its main part a little ways up the trail. The next is about 0.3 miles farther upstream, with the another at about 0.7 miles, and the last at about 1 mile from the trailhead.
