Overview

This easily accessible route begins at the South Lake Trailhead and circumnavigates Chocolate Peak in a lollipop-shaped loop. Located in Inyo National Forest, the loop features alpine lakes, colorful wildflowers, and rugged mountain views, making it a perfect choice for a scenic day hike or overnight trip just outside the small town of Bishop.

Need to Know

• Permits: Required for overnight trips, not for day hikes.
• Campfires: No fires above 10,000 feet.
• Food Storage: Store food and scented items in bear-proof containers.
• Water: Treat all water before drinking.
• Restrooms: Vault toilet at South Lake Trailhead.

Runner Notes

Bishop Pass Trail is well-maintained, but some sections of the Chocolate Lakes Loop, particularly beyond Long Lake, are less defined, rockier, and harder to follow.

Description

From South Lake Trailhead, start on the well-maintained Bishop Pass Trail. After about two miles, keep an eye out for the trail junction toward Chocolate Lakes. This turn can be easy to miss, so watch for the sign marking the way.

Once on the Chocolate-Ruwau Loop Trail, the path gradually ascends, passing by beautiful alpine lakes and offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail eventually winds its way past Ruwau Lake before reconnecting with the Bishop Pass Trail. From there, head back on the Bishop Pass Trail to complete the loop.

Flora & Fauna

During the summer months, the Chocolate Lakes Loop is abundant with alpine flora, including lupines, Indian paintbrush, and columbines. Keep an eye out for marmots and pikas among the rocks, and be sure to store your food and snacks securely to keep them out of reach of these animals.
