Leaving PCT: Echo Lake to Highway 80 (Donner Summit), the trail zigzags down towards Whiskey Creek. There are good camp sites near the creek if you are looking for an overnight stay. Take the bridge across Whiskey Creek and reach an old hut at 0.5 miles. The junction with Five Lakes Creek Trail #15E31 is just past the hut. Continue straight and follow the trail uphill for about 1.5 miles. Views start to open up after 1.6 miles giving you a great panorama across Squaw Saddle and the Five Lakes Creek valley. Reach the junction with Shanks Cove Trail #15E11 and the Western States Trail to the Picayune Valley at 2.6 miles.
