Need to Know
Conditions are very dependent on the tides and weather. Be prepared to wade through bit of water. Bring a tide table, and try to visit at low tide for slightly dryer conditions.
Description
Dune Forest Loop is a nice way to see this low-lying peninsula.
Go west a half-mile with junctions first for the
Bearberry Trail and next
Weather Beach Trail on your right (stay left). Then comes the
Weather Beach Trail about a half-mile from the parking lot (stay left). The trail will narrow and become lined with salal and invasive nasty Scotch Broom (yah spikes).
Continuing south along a sometimes-wide, sometimes very narrow trail. If you keep an eye out, you may find some ancient relics along the way. The trail turns back north nearly a mile in and cuts back through deepening forest before popping out at the lower parking lot and State Route 103.
After crossing State Route 103, head out to the shoreline. Walk north along the sandy beach bordering Willapa Bay. Often littered with driftwood and fallen trees, this section can be difficult to navigate when the tide is high.
Willapa Hills of southwest Washington to the east, but keep an eye out for the turnoff back into the forest and the parking area on the left near a viewing platform about a half-mile from where you joined the shore. Push into the forest and soon find yourself at the upper trailhead and parking area once again.
