Description
Sand Trail is a 12-mile long route providing access to Scott Glacier and the Scott River Drainage. This trail is primarily used by ATVs. The route follows Scott River for almost two miles before jogging to the west and continuing north through alder thickets, stream crossings, and glacier outwash plains.
Three bridges and several significant fords traverse designated stream crossings through critical salmon habitat. Marked and permitted crossings reduce resource damage and improve access to this area, which supports one of the largest Coho salmon runs on the Copper River Delta.
Stream fords vary drastically in depth depending on seasonal conditions. Much of the trail is constructed of gravel fill and turnpike, while other areas are native soil or natural outwash plains marked with rock borders. The trail ends on glacial moraines near the face of Scott Glacier.
