Need to Know

The water in Humbug Creek is unsafe for consumption and swimming is highly discouraged.

Description

Humbug Creek receives most of its water from Malakoff Diggins, one of the largest hydraulic mines in the region. The most noticeable feature of Humbug Creek is its orange brown color stemming from fine silts and clays holding mercury. The trail starts at the North Bloomfield - Graniteville Road.

Cross a wooden bridge over a tributary to Humbug Creek after 50 yards. The trail then loosely follows the creek all the way to the South Yuba River. A small camp site next to the river is to your left after about 0.6 miles. You reach a few pools and a small waterfall at 1.3 miles. As you continue, the trail gets steeper and the canyon carved by the creek becomes deeper. Reach the South Yuba River and the Humbug Creek picnic site at 2.5 miles.
