Can be flooded during Kaskaskia River flooding and Carlyle Lake high water. May be standing water or mud in low areas during wet seasons and when not frozen.

Description

Located in Eldon Hazlet State Park with trailhead near park office and parking lot, this easy/intermediate trail is well marked through southern Illinois wetland forest with minimal understory growth and occasionally skirts prairies. It is one of 9 miles of interconnected trails.

Signage near trailhead shows typical warnings of hazardous reptiles and plants. Evidence of wildlife abounds with footprints especially in muddy areas, and sounds of water fowl (geese) and woodpecker drumming. In fall and winter whitetail deer can be seen in late afternoons when they forage for food. In spring, summer, and early fall protection against mosquitos and ticks would be wise.

There are no restrooms along the trail, but there are public restrooms in the park. Other amenities such as campgrounds (some electrified) and cabins are available requiring reservations.

The park, leased from the US Army Corps of Engineers, is a few miles north of Carlyle Lake beach swimming area, boat docks, restaurant, and picnic area.
