Need to Know

No Water and sand get extremely hot. Teva is not a proper choice for this area.

Description

Start at the visitors center and head for the cloud of flies to the south. Once past the horse camp, you come to a dry marsh, most of the year, and briefly join the Equine Short Loop Trail for another dose of flies before branching off to the left at 1 mile. At about 1.5 miles you start to climb the biggest dune on a long ever steepening ridge.

It is only 2.5 miles to the summit but in the sand, you'll have done 4 miles by now. Take in the view and keep going along the ridge, down and around a large bowl, and up to the next peak at 3.25 miles (7 miles of sand). Now drop down to the lake and sneak through the trees.

Most will opt for the Education Center Trail to get back sooner but this trail still has more sand to the north as you skirt the second lake and end up at the boat ramp. From there take the road out to the main road where the trail continues West. At about 5.5 miles the trail splits, stay right to avoid the fly festival again.
