Lincoln Gap Road is closed in winter, so accessing the trail in winter requires significant additional mileage.
This trail is for winter use only when snow covered.
Overview
Wildflowers, gorgeous views, some challenging and mildly technical rock scrambles. This trail is a great, short trek that will get your blood pumping and reward you with a beautiful vista, especially at sunset!
Description
This short section of the Long Trail leads to a beautiful vista know as Sunset Ledge. The trail climbs about 400 feet in elevation gain, most of it during a steep section with some switch backs shortly after the beginning of the trail. After that the trail swings south and follows the ridge line through the forest and in the spring and early summer there are beautiful wildflowers.
After the first short rock scramble there is a small vista that looks out to the east (about 0.5 miles into the trail). After continuing along the rock surface you encounter another short scramble, then the trail surface becomes a mixture of dirt and bare rock.
Through the trail you'll encounter roots, small boulders and some loose rocks. There is a slight downhill as you approach Sunset Ledge, which will be on your right and looks west.
