This trail starts near the entrance sign for the Balsams Resort and climbs a series of sharp little switchbacks. It travels across a scree slope of broken rock up to Index Rock (on the right). It turns left (uphill) and follows some stone stairs up to Pinnacle-Balsams View. It climbs steeply up the junction with Sanguinary Summit Trail (#53) and continues straight. It passes multiple viewpoints as it descends down to the Flume Brook Trail.
