Description

The trailhead is along the paved Elkhorn National Scenic Byway approximately 10 miles north of Granite, Oregon. The first mile of the trail is through meadows interspersed with pine groves. The trail then heads down a relatively steep, shady canyon along Crane Creek until it reaches the North Fork John Day Trail. At this location there is a large area for multiple campsites if you are interested in an overnight trip. You can either return the same way, or continue upriver along the North Fork John Day Trail to its trailhead along the Elkhorn National Scenic Byway and then hike a couple miles back to the Crane Creek trailhead.
