Birding · Views · Wildflowers · Wildlife
Snowshoe trails are open during ski season. They may also be used in the off season.
This trail is for winter use only when snow covered.
Overview
Aspen Lookout and Daredevil Rock are prominent features along
Games Trail but you can't ski there! Snowshoes make any climb possible. Apart from a few steep bits, it's an overall easy run.
Need to Know
Birch Brook Chalet, with full services, is open during ski season and trail passes for snowshoeing are required. Trails can also be used in the off season, but no chalet amenities would be available.
Description
Starting by the old log cabin, follow snowshoe trail E1 across
Games Trail, across
Fox Trot and across
Games Trail again. Branch off onto snowshoe trail E2 by the blue map sign. There is a bit of an incline at the beginning and at two other places before E2 ends up right at the cliff face. It's an easy run from there to the turn to Aspen Lookout. There is a short steep incline to Aspen Lookout but the view is worth it.
Return via E2 and then E4 where you're high up with views all the way. Stop for a selfie at Daredevil Rock and then enjoy the descent. At the E4/E1 intersection, turn left to retrace the route back to the old log cabin.
Flora & Fauna
Black spruce forest, aspen groves. There will be moose, rabbit, and ptarmigan tracks.
History & Background
Much of this area was burnt in a forest fire in the 1980s. It is interesting to note how forest regeneration has proceeded differently in various sites.
