A strenuous trail (almost 1000m/3200ft. ascent) rewarded by an absolutely incredible view of the island and far beyond.

Do not attempt to run this trail at night (for example to watch sunrise from the viewpoint) without a local guide and flashlight. Similarly, start your descent early enough in order not to get trapped in the forest at night; the trail is full of stumbling blocks and maybe difficult to follow even with a flashlight. Watch sunset from the viewpoint only if you have a local guide to escort you down. Do the trail with at least one other person, also because of poisonous snakes present on the island.

Need to Know

If you're hiking and not running this trail, count on the ascent to take around 2 to 2.5 hours without breaks. Because of the high grade and many obstacles on the path, the descent will take another 2 hours.

Keep an eye on the weather report. Low hanging clouds may take away the view away completely, and although the trail is nice in itself, your efforts may have been for nothing. We postponed our ascent twice.

Make sure you are aware of the timing of sunset. Because 99% of the trail is through the jungle, the trail grows dark very fast.

Runner Notes

This trail is not suitable for trail running.

This trail is easily accessed from the main village on Ilha Grande, Abraao. Follow the main road (Estr. Dois Rios) that runs across the island from Abraao to the village of Dois Rios. After 15 minutes or so, you'll see the signpost of the trail entrance on your right hand side.

From this moment on, you'll be following a clear path that will climb continuously (with parts of up to 57% grade), through the islands' jungle forest up to the very last steps of the trail. Along the way, there are some signposts that point out the right way, but you hardly need them, and most of them are rotten anyways.

There are obstacles on the path, like fallen trees and small creeks, and oftentimes the trail is slippery. Many roots and branches both aid you in the ascent as well as cause a risk of tripping. All in all, the continuous ascending is the hardest part of this trail, but since there's enough time for breaks if you start early enough, this trail can be completed by people from a wide range of age.

On top of that the view from the "parrots beak" is totally worth it!! Instead of me describing it, just go see for yourself.

Flora & Fauna

Many different plants, trees, etc. Expect to see monkeys (miko's and other small species) and many different birds. There are at least two kinds of poisonous snakes present on this island (coral cobra is one of them); familiarize yourself with their behavior.
