Need to Know

The trail is 1.7 miles one-way, so out-and-back would be a 3.4 mile run.

Description

First, start out at the Prineville Reservoir Campground (or from near the entrance of Jasper Point CG about two miles to the east) and follow the trail. It starts out just to the right of the Deluxe Cabins at the campground and winds its way along the north shore of Prineville Reservoir for almost two miles, ending up at a fence and road just to the south of Juniper Canyon Rd.

For the most part, the trail is smooth sailing with great vistas of the reservoir, osprey and bald eagles (that's what I saw), but I'm sure there are lots of other critters there. There are a few minor obstacles to watch your footing on. Some of the trail is at a slight angle, which is strange at first, but you get used to it. There is one pitch about two-thirds through heading to Jasper Point that is somewhat steep with loose rock.

Overall, this is a fun trail. Not too long, but fun. I didn't see a single soul on it. Some of it toward Jasper Point looked like it hadn't even been walked on in a long time.
