Need to Know
Adventure Pass required to park at trailheads and day use areas.
Description
This is a nice short run suitable for families with small children that shows both the geology and flora of the area. The trail is reached by running the paved road a few hundred yards east of the
Windy Gap Trail #9W06 parking area to the signed trail marker.
The trail starts in a well shaded canopy of oaks and Jeffrey pines and reaches the loop junction. The left fork rises through a thick forest with many large boulders the size of trucks indicating substantial sliding that created the slope.
The trail ascends a broad ridge, and the forest gives way to an open field of native grasses, pinyon trees, and yuccas that are more commonly found on the northern slopes of the range. In spring there can be nice wildflowers here. The trail reaches a high point then drops back down and re-enters the forest back to the fork. Take your time!
