Runner Notes

This is a good trail that can be a little indistinct and difficult to follow.

Description

The trail can obviously be done either way, but as it's mapped here, the uphill is more gradual.

From the Birkhead Mountain Trail (about 3 miles if you're coming from the Tot Hill Farm parking lot), you'll see a sign pointing the trail out. Head downhill somewhat precipitously through the heavy woods. At times, this section of the trail can be indistinct, but as long as you look out for the yellow blazes, you won't lose the path. Soon, you come upon the Two Towers rock formation. Find your way down the hill, and you'll arrive at the picturesque North Prong of Hannah's Creek. It's an easy rock hop across, and you begin to head back up.

The next section of trail is pock-marked with a few old test mines from back when there was a gold rush on the Uwharries. Old rusted equipment can be found here and there. Camp Three is found shortly after this section and continues to hold some of the old test mines.

Heading along the trail from here, the trail gradually rises along an old u-shaped road that is being reclaimed by nature. Continue on and you reconnect with the Birkhead Mountain Trail.
