Description
This trail is called Confinale because it skirts the border (confine) with Switzerland in many places. There are a number of stones along the route that signify the border, as well as some more obvious fencing. Mostly, the route travels through heavy forest.
Starting from
Via Cardono, the trail climbs along a forest road towards the summit of Monte Sasso and the World War I era fortifications at the top. There are a couple of support structures for the fortifications along the way.
There is a short connector at the 1.6 km (1 mi) mark that takes you up into some well preserved World War I era trenches and the
Cavallasca (7) trail. This area is definitely worth exploring as there are some great views of Lago di Como (lake) and into Switzerland.
The Confinale (2) trail continues as a footpath down the mountain towards Switzerland. After a steep descent including some stairs, it follows the border with Switzerland for a short distance. The Parco del Penz - Pista Cicliable (Sentiero) 4 is on the other side of the fence in Switzerland, but I couldn't find a way to cross the border here.
Around the 3 km (1.8 mi) mark, you'll pass the spring which is the source of the Torrente Seveso (creek). After another kilometer (0.6 mi), you'll reach the Parè wetland. This is a good place for birdwatching with the possibility to see herons, woodpeckers, and other birds. There is also a gate here where you can cross into Switzerland. You'll enter the Parco del Penz, which has its own network of trails. This also happens to be the southernmost point in Switzerland, so you can cross that off your bucket list too.
From the Parè wetland, you'll follow along the border again for a short distance. At the 4.5 km (2.8 mi), the trail follows a forest road, ending at the paved road near the Drezzo border crossing.
The trails in this area are not well marked and maps are hard to come by, so you'll definitely want a GPX or the
Trail Run Project mobile app for this one.
Flora & Fauna
The Parè wetland offers the opportunity for some birding.
