Runner Notes
Watch for cyclists along this route. Most runners keep to the right to allow for bicycles to pass. Overall, the trail is quiet, shady and flat. Mountain bikers will find some sections of singletrack continuing under Huebner and also in the Salado Creek creek bed. Pokemon Go players will find a few gyms along the way.
Description
Parking, water fountains, and portable restrooms are located at Walker Ranch Park and Tobin Park. From Walker Ranch heading east, you'll find shade along Salado Creek (dry creek bed) until you reach a sunny stretch along Wurzbach Parkway. There is ample sidewalk along Wurzbach with views of San Antonio International airport.
Climb a small hill near Wetmoore Road, and you'll come to a beautiful long section of boardwalk bridge through a marshy area north of Nacogdoches Rd. Return to the shady paths to cross under I-410 into Tobin Park. The trail continues downhill southward. Although there is no trailhead on the southern end of this stretch, there are possibilities via Holbrook Rd to work your way towards reconnecting with other trails on the south side.
Walker Ranch Park to Hardberger Park: This is a portion of the Salado Creek Greenway which extends for miles in either direction. The trail is a wide concrete path and easy to navigate, used by cyclists, joggers, and dog walkers. This is a flat course with a few minor hills, and it stays relatively shady as it follows the creek bed. Both parks have parking, water fountains, picnic area, playgrounds, and bathroom facilities.
Hardberger Park to Huebner Trailhead: This section of the Salado Greenway continues the trails as a wide concrete sidewalk and ends at Huebner Road which is a good turnaround point. Runners can continue beyond the Huebner Trailhead on local sidewalks, but there is no parking at the trailhead and it is not a bike friendly access point. At Hardberger Park, there are very nice parking and bathroom facilities.
