“An excellent gravel singletrack up into the mountains.”
— John Geronimo
This trail is open to motorcycles and mountain bikers, be alert as you run.
The Rim Trail is very popular, but the escarpment below is also excellent for runners who don't mind some good cardio. The Alamo Peak Trail provides one such option as it ascends to Alamo Lookout Road (FR64D)
. There are also some tufa spring deposits along the trail to add some visual interest.
The lower section from the trailhead is singletrack running along the hillside to quickly pass Atkinson Field Trail #111
. The middle section is an access road to shallow wells that supply Alamogordo. You'll pass Pipeline Trail #110
The upper section is very coarse gravel with some loose rocks in spots. There are six wide and easy switchbacks starting at mile 2.0. The trail is convex along the mountainside with some strong cross-slopes but it is well-dished so progress is easy.
There is abundant parking at camping space near the bottom trailhead on FR93. The top of the trail can connect to the Rim Trail (T105)
via Alamo Lookout Road (FR64D)
