Description

New York Mountain is a 12,550 foot peak in the Northern Sawatch Range of Colorado that overlooks Eagle, Edwards, and the Red Table area to the west. It is a great day run near Hwy 70.

This route covers both a short and a long approach to New York Mountain. The long version of the run is from the Edwards side and starts near the Baryeta Cabins (see directions below) and winds steeply up through meadows full of wildflowers in season and through forested slopes. At about 3 miles, the trail encounters a parking lot reached from Eagle that is about 1.6 miles from the summit; this is the second trailhead.

At this point, the trails makes some sweeping switchbacks up a retired mining road to reach tree line. Continuing on and following cairns up some gentle switchbacks then cresting a ridge, you can see the summit. After running a level stretch for 0.2-0.3 miles, the last 200 yards is a scramble over medium-sized rocks. The summit affords views of both Eagle and Edwards and views of Gold Dust Peak (13,380) and Mt. Jackson (13,675) to the south and east. Mt. Sopris, Capital Peak, Snowmass Mountain, and the tips of the Maroon Bells are to the south, with Red Table and Hardscrabble to the west.

Directions to Baryeta Cabins trailhead: From Hwy 6 in Edwards, head south on Lake Creek Road. About 1.8 miles in, turn right onto West Lake Creek Road. As the paved road turns sharply left, go right up Forest Road 423, a rough, rutted 4-wheel drive road and take it 4.1 miles until you see the New York Mountain trail sign on the right.

Directions to higher trailhead: From Eagle, follow signs towards Sylvan Lake. Turn left on Forest Road 415 and turn left on Forest Road 418 towards and well past Fulford. Continue past the signs for the Polar Star Inn and up to a parking area with New York Mountain and Nolan Lake Trailhead signs.
