Features: Spring — Views — Wildflowers
The Zion Trail connects the Sturtevant Trail near Sturtevant Camp to the Upper Winter Creek Trail near Hoegees Camp. The trail climbs gently from Santa Anita Canyon to pass under a shady canopy of oak, bigcone spruce and bay trees. Eventually, the trail reaches a saddle in about 1 mile. There is a short spur trail leading to the summit with nice views of the canyon and Mt. Wilson.
The trail descends steeply on a south-facing slope of mixed chaparral species. The monkeyflowers can be spectacular in spring. It then drops down to Winter Creek while passing under shady bay trees. It is possible to return to Chantry Flat by taking either the Upper Winter Creek Trail #11W23
or the Lower Winter Creek Trail. It makes a great loop run when combined with the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) 11W14
from Chantry Flat.
Oaks, bigcone spruce, and bay trees grow here. You'll find nice monkeyflowers in late spring. Beware of poison oak!
