Once you reach Spruce, your return trip is uphill; plan accordingly, bring snacks and water to fuel your run back out. Please pack it in pack it out.

Before starting your run, stop by the Mountain Adventure Center in the village for a backcountry trail map and current trail updates.

Description

The trailhead is accessed from the bottom of Lower Spruce Road or Fire Tower Trail. McDonald Way follows the Shavers Fork River to the abandoned logging town of Spruce. Once you reach the end of the road, run across the railroad tracks to the picnic area or take a stroll on the informative path to see the remnants of the once bustling logging town of Spruce.
