Overview

This is an easy day trip that follows along part of the Appalachian Trail. You'll encounter airplane wreckage at the south summit and a cabin on the return half.

Need to Know

The Clark Pond Loop is actually called the "Wolfeboro Road" on the mountain (orange sign). It is exactly that, a road. And it is extremely muddy at the top (or, at least it was on 06/15/19).

Description

The trail heads up Moose Mountain and follows on part of the Appalachian Trail.

At roughly a half mile in when crossing over Mink Brook, the trail will cross over a Class IV road. Continue straight towards the swamp and skip the Harris Trail that leads to Harris Cabin.

After following the trail up to the summit of South Moose Mountain, you'll find wreckage of a plane crash from 1968.

Continue on the trail that travels to the north summit of Moose after crossing a summit bog downhill. The trail enters the col between the north and south summits and intersects with the Clark Pond Loop. This loop run continues to the left by following the Clark Pond Loop.

Clark Pond Loop eventually intersects the Harris Trail. Follow this trail back to the four-way junction you previously crossed before going up the mountain. Take a right and retrace your steps back to the car.

History & Background

In 1968, a Northeast Airlines plane crashed on the south ridge below the summit.
