Overview

This route is an 84-mile foot path from coast to coast, following Hadrian's Wall (a World Heritage Site). There are ancient ruins, market towns, pubs, and places to stay along this run.

Need to Know

Plan in advance for locations and recommended stops. You'll find pubs, B&Bs, or hostels at which to stay. There are camping locations as well, but I'll defer to others to describe them. Plan in advance for places to stay along the way.

Description

This trail is typically enjoyed over the course of seven days, either East to West from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, or West to East. Many prefer West to East for lower expected winds, but our trip East to West actually had the winds to our backs the entire time. Each day's trip may range from 11 miles to 18 miles, depending on your planning.

Some days are more urban, such as making your way through Newcastle-upon-Tyne, while others are almost entirely on footpaths crossing pastures. There are a couple of days with very strenuous up and down sections, but they also have the best views of the wall and the surrounding land.

History & Background

Follows the historic route of Hadrian's Wall. While the wall is not present along the entirety of the path, many sections have a partial wall or fully restored wall. Read more about the Emperor Hadrian and this wall to find out more.
