“A beautiful run on a well-maintained Department of Conversation trail.”

It’s easy to see why Lake Hayes is called "the most photographed lake in New Zealand" or "mirror lake" . Reflecting the majestic mountains of the Wakatipu Basin and the earthy tones of the landscape, this lake offers a million and one Kodak moments.
As you run Lake Hayes, you’ll experience a taster-plate of all that makes Queenstown special: exquisite mountain and lake vistas, a boardwalk protecting local wildlife, historic cottages, and a close-up view of some of the area’s most notable homes.
Just a stone’s throw from the lake's shore on Lake Hayes Road is the award-winning Amisfield Winery and Bistro. An afternoon of wine-tasting and lunch in the vine-covered courtyard is a deliciously-decadent way to round off the perfect morning’s run! Or, for a more rustic experience, head to Walnut Cottage. Enjoy great coffee and incredible home-cooked food in the shade of a giant 100-year-old Walnut tree! Transport back home can be arranged.
Lake Hayes is at the very "heart" of Queenstown’s 120 km trails – the jewel in the crown, it is easily accessible from Arrowtown, Queenstown, and Gibbston sections. So while it’s an enjoyable short run in itself (under an hour), many like to make a day of it and incorporate the Lake Hayes Loop into runs from Gibbston, Arrrowtown and Queenstown.
