Description

This short trail allows runners to explore the area of the largest ancient Indian ruin in Agua Fria. Dating back to before 1200 AD, the Pueblo La Plata ruin may, at first glance, just seem like a pile of rubble, but it was once a large living quarter with 80-90 rooms. Additional research in the area has uncovered about 400 other sites indicating that the community here was large.

Today, relatively few people visit the site because it is difficult to access without a 4WD vehicle. A high clearance 4×4 is required to get to the trailhead or you can run the two-mile road in from Bloody Basin Road.

There are many artifacts remaining in the area. Please practice “Leave No Trace” principles and do not take anything from the site. It is illegal to remove artifacts from an archeological site on federal land.

Directions: Exit 259 off Route 17 from Phoenix. Turn right on Bloody Basin Road and follow it for 8.5 miles. Pueblo La Plata is on the left and a sign marks the way.
