The road starts at the parking area at the end of the Chain of Craters Road near the town of Kalapana. The road is nicely graded and is very busy with foot and bike traffic. It passes through expansive lava flows with views up towards Kilauea and out to the ocean.

After a little over four miles of road running, you'll leave the road and continue a short distance down to the Kamokuna ocean entry viewing area where you can see the spectacular view of lava flowing into the ocean. The view is enjoyed by many during sunset when the steam cloud lights up orange in contrast to the darkening sky.

Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. This route is very hot and there is no shade! Volcanic activity can change rapidly. Make sure to check the current conditions here! The viewing location may have even changed, so make sure to check with the National Park Service. This route shows the viewing location as of April 2017.

The fastest way to get to Kamokuna ocean entry lava viewing area is by bicycle. There are many vendors wishing to rent you bikes at the parking area. If you do not rent ahead of time, don't worry, there are many bikes to choose from!
