Overview

Features: Birding — Fall Colors — Lake — Wildlife
Dogs: Leashed

Description

This is an interesting trail in the southernmost point in Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, and it even continues out of the park into the Rockaway River Wildlife Management Area.

This trail is accessible via the Highlands Trail (Teal) and is an out-and-back style run. It is singletrack through many hills and valleys typical to the New Jersey Highlands Area, and includes several sections up through exposed bedrock. It is one of the few parts of Mahlon Dickerson where you cannot here the sounds of civilization.

The Lost Lake itself is relaxing and there are beaver dams to be seen on the south end.

While not the best trail in the park in terms of scenery, it is the best in terms of solitude and well worth some time.

Note: Once past Lost Lake, the trail continues outside of Mahlon Dickerson and can be followed to Berkshire Valley Road.

Flora & Fauna

Typical Northern New Jersey woodlands. It is not recommended to swim in Lost Lake as there are no beaches, and it is full of vegetation. The section between Berkshire Valley Road and the Lost Lake is reputed to have many bears, though no incidents have been reported.
