Overview

Wolverine Peak is a strenuous uphill climb that quickly rises above the treeline and offers amazing views. Wolverine Peak is visible from most places in Anchorage and climbing this peak is a must for anyone not intimidated by ~3,000 feet of elevation gain. From the top, you look east into the depths of the Chugach State Park. You can forget you are just a few miles from a large metropolitan city.

Need to Know

Take lots of water and carry a jacket even in the height of summer. From the top, the winds blow cold over the snows from the mountains to the east. Elevation affects temperature from between 3.3-5.4 degrees per 1,000 feet. The 5,000 foot peak can be 17-27 degrees cooler than down in town.

Description

From the Prospect Heights parking lot, follow signs for Wolverine Peak. The route starts off on the Wolverine Bowl Trail; in summer, the dense foliage can quickly grow to above eye height and often protrudes onto the trail. Press through and continue uphill to climb above the tree line. At a trail junction, you'll take a right onto the Wolverine Peak Trail, which will continue to the summit. This portion is strenuous, so be prepared for slower-than-expected travel.

The trail offers lots of opportunities for spotting wildflowers and wildlife. After climbing above tree line, take frequent breaks to turn around and look at the stunning views.

Flora & Fauna

In late summer keep an eye out for fireweed, a plant that blooms very red and can make the hillsides look like they are on fire.
