Choose your direction based on preference of going up or down stairs. There are a few sets of staircases built into the hills of this trail, one staircase had 197 steps! If you start as indicated (the west entrance) you'll be going UP all of the staircases. If you start further from the visitor center, on the east side, you'll be going DOWN all of the staircases.
Aside from stairs, this trail also has a number of shallow rocky stream crossings. When I have visited, they have been dry enough to cross without threat of getting your feet wet, though if you visit in the early spring that may not be the case. Half of this trail runs parallel to a small creek, the same creek that you cross a few times.
There is also an old pump house that is interesting to check out, it's right off the trail near the stream and the west entrance.
The entire trail is gravel paved.
